Walkscape was founded by street artist, muralist and installation artist Roadsworth. It represents a distillation of almost two decades of experience activating public spaces around the world through art and design.  Walkscape draws on the knowledge and experience gleaned from collaborations with artists, architects, landscape architects, urban planners, municipal representatives, traffic engineers, artist run centres, commercial associations, non-profits, etc… It brings together skills acquired while working on a variety of projects: way finding, placemaking, pilot projects, city, art run centres, traffic calming etc

Walkscape operates on the basis of two core principles:

1) Life is better outside of a car

2) Play is an essential part of everyday life.

In other words, communities that are less dependent on cars encourage more person to person interaction, more engagement with one’s environment and an overall sense of belonging.  Making more pedestrian friendly spaces available encourages people to walk, bike or…roller-skate. This ultimately reduces the dependence on cars which ultimately results in healthier communities.  And while we tend to think that playing is just for kids, “play” is simply another word for creativity. Creating spaces that are conducive to play helps unlock a community’s creative potential and supports the idea that life is not simply about getting from A to B but appreciating the space in between.

Walkscape represents an effort to bring positive solutions to a fast changing world. The threat of climate change in particular represents unprecedented challenges to society as a whole and to cities in particular.  A variety of solutions will be required to meet the significant challenges of both drastically reducing carbon emissions while simultaneously adapting to increasing environmental volatility. Walkscape’s mission to increase pedestrian and bike friendly spaces and to promote active modes of transportation is one solution among many that will be required to meet the many challenges ahead.
